Compare · ccusage and Selan

# Is there a ccusage alternative for a whole team?

Yes, if you need a team's usage rather than one laptop's. ccusage is a free, open-source CLI that reads the usage logs coding agents write on the machine it runs on. Selan is a gateway: every Claude Code, Codex and Claude Desktop request a team sends through it is recorded under the person who made it. For one developer on one machine, ccusage is the better answer.

## How do ccusage and Selan compare?

| | ccusage | Selan |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it reads | The usage logs coding agents write on this machine, such as `~/.claude/projects` and `~/.codex` | Each request as it passes through the gateway, under the person signed in |
| Where it runs | On your machine. Your usage data never leaves it; prices are fetched unless you pass `--offline` | A hosted service, built and hosted in the EU, between the tools and the providers |
| Who sees it | Whoever runs it on that machine | The owner sees everyone; each developer sees only their own spend |
| Claude Code | Yes, with a report per 5-hour window | Yes, through `selan claude` |
| Codex | Yes, marked beta | Yes, through `selan codex` |
| Claude Desktop | Not in its list of sources | Yes, with one settings file |
| Other tools | 18 sources in all, among them OpenCode, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot CLI | Claude Code, Codex and Claude Desktop |
| Cost figures | Estimates from token counts and list prices, which its docs say may not match the bill | Pay-per-use keys at what they cost; a subscription seat at what the same requests would have cost per token |
| Limits | None: it reads files and never changes anything | A spend limit per person, by day, week or month, on pay-per-use keys |
| Cost | Free, MIT licence, no account | Free for up to three seats, no card; needs an account |

## When is ccusage the better answer?

When you are one developer and want to know what you used on your own machine. It runs with `npx ccusage@latest`, with no account and nothing to connect. The analysis happens locally, and your usage data stays on your computer.

Because it reads logs already on disk, it shows usage from before the day you installed it. It covers coding CLIs that Selan does not, such as OpenCode, Gemini CLI and GitHub Copilot CLI. Reports come by day, week, month, session and project, and it prints JSON for your own scripts.

If none of the work is a team's, you do not need a gateway.

## When is Selan the better answer?

When you need to know what the whole team used. ccusage only analyses data from the machine it runs on, so a team total means collecting every developer's figures by hand.

With Selan, each developer signs in once with `selan login`, and the owner's Usage page ranks people and teams over the last 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Claude Desktop is in the same figures as Claude Code and Codex. Subscription seats and pay-per-use keys appear side by side, in the same unit, and a request that cannot be priced shows as unknown, never as zero.

A spend limit binds the moment it is reached, rather than turning up in next week's report. Selan does not cap a subscription seat; its ceiling is the provider's own usage window.

What the Usage page shows per person and per team is in [how to see Claude Code usage per developer](https://selan.ai/guides/claude-code-usage-per-developer), and limits are on [the spend page](https://selan.ai/solutions/spend).

## What does a developer see with Selan instead of ccusage?

A statusline in Claude Code with the company's 5-hour and 7-day headroom and their own spend against their own budget. `selan usage` prints the same numbers without launching Claude Code, which is how a Codex user reads them. A developer never sees anybody else's numbers.

Every meter is explained in [the statusline docs](https://selan.ai/docs/statusline), and the command in [the reference](https://selan.ai/docs/reference).

## Can you use ccusage and Selan together?

Yes. Selan does not change where Claude Code and Codex keep their logs, so ccusage still reads them on each machine. If you set `ccusage statusline` as your own Claude Code statusline, Selan leaves it alone and draws none of its own.

The two count different things. ccusage estimates cost from one machine's logs, while Selan records each request that passed through it.

**Good to know:** a session started outside Selan, on a personal account, shows up in ccusage and not in Selan.

### The short version

- ccusage is free, runs on one machine and reads the usage logs already on it.
- Selan records a team's Claude Code, Codex and Claude Desktop requests under the person who made each one.
- You can use both: Selan does not move the logs ccusage reads.

What ccusage does is as its own README and documentation at ccusage.com described it at version 20.0.30, read on 13 October 2026. What Selan does is selan-cli and selan-control as they stood on the same day.
